The Navigation Inn occupies a picturesque setting with the Leeds to Liverpool canal passing on one side (moorings are available) and the River Douglas just yards away on the other. The two waterways meet about half a mile away at Dean Lock. The inn is part of the tiny hamlet of Gathurst, a rural retreat just over 3.5 miles from Wigan and a few minutes drive from Junction 26 and 27 of the M6. Despite its miniscule size Gathurst even has its own railway station on the Southport to Manchester line. For those that like to sit outside there is now a new beer garden at the rear. The Navigation is very popular with lovers of real ale and will be included in the 2005 CAMRA guide. There are usually 5 of them on tap, including Tetley's Cask, Timothy Taylor Landlord and 3 rotating guest ales.
